Lesson Details
Key learning points
- Quadrilaterals always have four sides, vertices and angles.
- Quadrilaterals always have straight sides and sharp vertices.
- Quadrilaterals can have right angles.
- Vertices are the corners of the shape.
Common misconception
Pupils may have trouble recognising right angles or lines of symmetry when shapes have been rotated.
Encourage pupils to check every angle using a simple right-angle measurer, which can be hand made or even cut from the corner of a piece of paper. Ask them to physically manipulate the shapes so that they can identify properties more easily.
Keywords
Quadrilateral - A polygon with four straight sides.
Vertex - The point where two lines meet.
Vertices - More than one vertex.
Properties - A character or quality that something has.
