Key learning points
- The addends and sum are recorded in columns with the same value digits in the same column.
- When using column addition, start by adding the numbers with the smallest place value first.
- When there are missing addends, subtract the known part from the whole, or the known addend from the sum.
Common misconception
Pupils may find it challenging to lay out column addition where they are adding a 3-digit number and a 2-digit number.
Emphasise the place value. Continually ask the pupils, 'Where is the tens column? Where is the hundreds column? How many tens does this number have? How many hundreds does this number have?' so that they begin asking these questions themselves.
