Key learning points
- Look carefully at the numbers in a calculation. Is column addition the most efficient method to use to find the sum?
- Use strategies to help you check your calculations.
- Estimate the answer first to improve your accuracy.
Common misconception
Pupils may struggle to use estimation to help them with checking addition equations.
Encourage pupils to find the nearest multiple of 10 or 100 to the numbers they are adding. They will not yet be familiar with ‘rounding’. Estimated answers do not need to be really accurate, then are just an approximation and help when checking.
Keywords
Efficient - Being efficient means finding a way to solve a problem quickly whilst also maintaining accuracy.
Estimation - Estimation means to find a value that is close enough to the right answer, usually with some thought or calculation involved.
Regrouping - The process of unitising and exchanging between place values is known as regrouping.
