Key learning points

- Grouping the digits in threes helps to read and write numbers.
- Other number systems use different symbols.
- Roman numerals have a system of rules which use different place value structures.
Common misconception
Pupils forget the use of zero as a place holder when there are for example, 0 ten thousands in a number, e.g. 503,000
Encourage children to transfer the represented number into a place value chart prior to reading the number. However, it is important for pupils to be able to read numbers without a place value chart so ensure time is taken to reduce the scaffold too.
