Key learning points
- The whole has been divided into __ equal parts.
- Each equal part is one-__ of the whole.
- You can represent fractions with an image, symbol and name.
- Equal parts may not look the same.
Common misconception
Pupils struggle to visualise when considering 3D parts and wholes and cannot identify a given fractional part of a 3D whole, particularly when presented on a screen as a picture.
Provide opportunities for pupils to experience fractional parts of 3D shapes in real life situations e.g. base 10 blocks or using cuboids such as small cereal variety boxes or photocopying paper boxes. Physical manipulation can support visualisation.
