Key learning points
- If the tens number is not a multiple of the divisor then the remainder is recorded next to the ones digit.
- If there is a remainder after dividing the tens digit the tens are exchanged and the ones digit becomes a 2-digit number
- If the number of ones, including any exchanged tens, is not a multiple of the divisor, there will be a remainder.
Common misconception
Working through algorithmically without having an understanding of the regrouped amount.
Clear modelling with PVC. Ask children 'What does this number represent?'. Continue to use sentence stems.
Keywords
Remainder - A remainder is an amount left over after division (happens when the first number does not divide exactly by the other).
Regroup / regrouping - The process of unitising and exchanging between place values is known as regrouping.
