Key learning points
- If the tens number is not a multiple of the divisor then the remainder is recorded next to the ones digit.
- If there is a remainder after dividing the tens digit the tens are regrouped and the ones digit becomes a 2-digit number
- If the number of ones, including any regrouped tens, is a multiple of the divisor, there will be no remainder.
Common misconception
Pupils not understanding and/or recording the regrouped amount.
Continue to use language of unitisation. For example '7 tens ÷ 3 is 2 tens remainder 1 ten.' Ask what the regrouped amount represents.
