- Identify the next and previous whole numbers to the number being rounded.
- Identify which whole number is nearest to the number being rounded.
- If the value of the tenths is 5 or greater then round to the next whole number.
- If the value of the tenths is less than 5, round to the previous whole number.
Common misconception
Pupils say the previous multiple of one as a whole before e.g. previous multiple of 3.4 as 2 or 2.4
Place the number on a number line and clarify the whole numbers it sits between.
