Coins can be added in any order and the total value will remain the same.
It can be easier to add coins if you move them, group together coins of the same value or start with the greatest value.
When adding coins, you can use strategies you already know to help you add efficiently.
It is more efficient to use fewer coins of greater value than a greater number of lower value coins.

Common misconception

Children may start counting out using any coins available instead of thinking of the whole amount needed first and partitioning it into manageable parts where they can deploy known strategies.

Encourage children to use what they know about making 10, and the numbers up to 10, to find combinations that use the fewest possible coins to total a given value.
