Lesson Details
Key learning points
- The clock face shows 12 hours and 60 minutes on the same scale.
- Between the hours, the scale also shows 5 minutes.
- When telling and writing the time to five minutes past on a clock face, both the hour hand and the minute hand are used.
Common misconception
The lesson deals with the idea of minutes past the hour to 5 minutes past. Pupils may overgeneralise and say that when sixty minutes have gone past the hour we say sixty minutes past.
Ensure plenty of time is spent dealing with this concept and that pupils are comfortable with the idea that when the minute hand is pointing to 12, it is an o'clock time with no minutes having gone past the hour.
Keywords
Minute - A unit of time equal to 60 seconds. There are 60 minutes in an hour.
