Lesson Details
Key learning points
- The short hand on a clock face shows which hour we are at or near.
Common misconception
Pupils may see the minute hand as the hour hand, treating wherever the minute hand is pointing to as o'clock.
The lesson deliberately chooses to present clocks featuring just an hour hand to really focus in on its purpose. O'clock times with the hour hand and minute hand feature later in the unit. Explain to pupils that clocks do not only have an hour hand.
Keywords
O'clock - Used with the numbers 1 to 12 when telling the time to mean an exact hour.
Hour hand - The small hand on a clock that points to the hour.
