Key learning points
- When we add one, we can see this as the number after in our count. We can think of this as one more.
- When we subtract one, we can see this as the number before in our count. We can think of this as one less.
- Adding two from an even/odd number, we can see this as the even/odd number after. We can think of this as two less.
- Subtracting two from an even/odd number, can be seen as the even/odd number before. We can think of this as two less.
Common misconception
Children may resort to counting strategies to find the difference e.g. counting back to subtract. Children may incorrectly identify the even/odd number 'before' or 'after' the one given.
Provide practice for children to identify numbers before/after or odd/even numbers before/after a given one. Initially, allow children to use a number line. Remove this scaffold once feeling more confident.
