Key learning points
- Skip count using a number line alongside representations of numbers and explain what is the same.
- When you count in odds or evens you count in jumps of two.
- Numbers that can be made out of pairs are even numbers. Numbers that cannot be made out of pairs are odd numbers.
- Odd and even numbers alternate. Between two odd numbers is an even number and between two even numbers is an odd number.
Common misconception
Children may be so familiar with counting in ones that they might find it hard to count in twos.
Try saying all the numbers but whisper or clap the odd numbers to emphasise the even numbers and vice versa.
Keywords
Pairs - Two together. Often with something in common.
Skip count - Counting forwards or backwards by a number other than 1.
