Lesson Details
Key learning points
- When -ing is added to the end of a word, it can show the past tense or the present tense.
- If the root word has a short vowel and a single consonant, the consonant letter is doubled when the suffix is added.
- If the verb ends in a "y", just add "-ing".
- How to spell the curriculum word: answer.
Common misconception
Pupils may think 'y' is removed and replaced with an 'i', like with the suffix -ed.
Show that we end up with two 'i's in a row if this happens: fly becoming fliing, so we keep the 'y'.
