Key learning points
- A recount is a type of writing which retells something that has already happened
- Recounts are mostly told in chronological or time order
- Recounts are mostly written in the first person using 'I', 'me' and 'my'
- Personal recounts can include facts and opinions
- Recounts are told in the past tense
Common misconception
Pupils may struggle to speak correctly in the past tense, particularly with irregular verbs (e.g. saying 'sawed' or 'seed' for saw).
Use this lesson as an opportunity for as much oral rehearsal as possible to support children's errors in the moment. Repeat and re-model sentences back to them. Model incorrectly and ask the children to spot your mistakes.
