High frequency words are words that appear most frequently in written texts.
Letters in the high frequency words will be joined using a range of joins depending on the letters in the word.
The first letter of the word always has a lead in and the last letter has a lead out.
There is appropriate spacing between the letters.
You don’t lift your pencil until the letter string is complete.

Common misconception

Once children start joining words they can forget the correct way to join the letters and just join them in a random manner.

Let them look at the word first and identify how the letters join, then practise and get them to self-assess their joins. Encourage them to identify any mistakes so they can learn from these.
